The front suspension on the Volkswagen Passat B5 and B5.5 (1997–2005) is a highly engineered multi-link setup designed for excellent handling. However, with 4 control arms per side (8 total), plus sway bar links and tie rod ends, it is a notorious wear item.
Replacing the entire kit at a dealership or local shop can easily cost over $1,200 in labor alone. By doing this job yourself in your garage, you will save a massive amount of money. This guide covers the complete replacement process, the infamous “pinch bolt” trick, and critical factory torque specifications.
📊 Torque Specifications & Job Info
| Component | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Top Strut Tower Bolts (3x) | 15 ft-lbs / 20 Nm | Inside the engine bay |
| Pinch Bolt (Upper Arms) | 30 ft-lbs / 40 Nm | Use a new high-tensile bolt! |
| Lower Straight Control Arm (Inner) | 66 ft-lbs / 90 Nm + 90° turn | Tighten ONLY at ride height |
| Lower Curved Control Arm (Inner) | 66 ft-lbs / 90 Nm + 90° turn | Tighten ONLY at ride height |
| Lug Bolts (Wheels) | 89 ft-lbs / 120 Nm | Standard VAG wheel torque |
🧰 Tools and Quality Parts Required
Never buy cheap, no-name suspension kits for a B5. They will fail within 5,000 miles. Always opt for OEM or high-quality tier-1 suppliers like Lemförder, Meyle HD, or TRW.
- Complete Front Control Arm Kit: Includes all 8 arms, sway bar links, tie rods, and crucial new installation hardware.
- PB Blaster / WD-40 Specialist: Penetrating oil is mandatory for this job.
- Ball Joint Separator tool: To pop the lower joints without damaging steering knuckles.
- Torque Wrench: Capable of reading both low values (40 Nm) and high values (90 Nm + turn).

🔧 Step-by-Step Installation Process
Step 1: Raise the Car and Remove Wheels
Loosen the lug bolts while the car is on the ground. Safely jack up the front end of the Passat and secure it on heavy-duty jack stands. Remove the front wheels and the plastic wheel well liner pieces if you need extra visibility.
Step 2: Conquering the Infamous VAG “Pinch Bolt”
The single long bolt holding the two upper control arm ball joints into the steering knuckle is legendary for rusting solid.
- Spray it heavily with penetrating oil.
- Thread the nut until it is flush with the end of the bolt, and hit it firmly with a hammer to shock the rust.
- DO NOT use an impact wrench on the bolt head initially, or you will snap it off inside the knuckle, turning a 2-hour job into a 2-day nightmare.
- Slowly work it back and forth until it slides out.
Step 3: Remove the Upper Control Arms and Strut Assembly
Unbolt the three 13mm bolts inside the engine bay plenum chamber holding the upper strut hat. Drop the entire strut tower assembly out of the car. This makes replacing the two upper control arms on the bench incredibly easy. Note the exact angle of the old arms before removing them!
Step 4: Replace the Lower Control Arms
Using your ball joint separator, pop the lower straight arm and the lower curved guide arm from the steering knuckle. Unbolt the inner bushings from the subframe. Install the new arms, but leave the subframe inner bolts loose for now.
Step 5: CRITICAL STEP – Pre-Loading the Suspension
NEVER torque down control arm rubber bushings while the car is hanging in the air. If you do, the bushings will twist tightly once the car hits the ground and will tear apart within weeks.
- Place a floor jack under the brake rotor hub.
- Jack up the suspension assembly until the car just begins to lift off the jack stand. This simulates real “ride height.”
- Now, torque all inner subframe bolts to 66 ft-lbs / 90 Nm plus a 1/4 (90-degree) turn.
Step 6: Reassemble and Schedule an Alignment
Reinstall the strut tower, tighten the upper pinch bolt, mount your wheels, and lower the car. Because you changed the tie rod ends and control geometry, your steering alignment will be completely thrown off. Take the car to a professional shop for a full 4-wheel alignment immediately.
