When performing regular maintenance or fluid flushes on a Volkswagen Passat B5 or B5.5 (1997–2005), having access to the exact fluid types, oil weight specifications, and mechanical torques is vital.

Because these cars were configured with totally different powertrains across North America and Europe, generic parts store manuals often list the wrong specifications. This ultimate cheat sheet serves as a clean, quick-reference landing page providing exact factory specs for your garage workbench—covering 1.8T, V6, and TDI variants in both metric and US imperial units.

📊 Comprehensive Engine Fluid & Part Specifications

Keep this reference page bookmarked for your next garage service day. Always double-check your specific engine code plate on the cylinder head before ordering specialized tune-up parts.

⚠️ Important Platform Maintenance Warnings

🔴 The Power Steering Fluid Trap

Never pour generic, off-the-shelf “Universal” power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid (ATF) into your Passat’s hydraulic steering reservoir reservoir. The B5 system uses a highly specific mineral-based fluid (VAG Spec TL 52 146 or Pentosin CHF 11S / 202). Mixing generic thick petroleum-based fluid into this green fluid will chemically attack and melt the internal rubber seals of your steering rack, leading to a massive leak and an expensive rack replacement within a few hundred miles.

🟢 The G12 Coolant Color Rule

Your cooling system is filled with pink or purple VAG G12/G12+ long-life organic acid technology antifreeze. If you mix this with standard green or blue silicated antifreeze found at regular gas stations, the two chemicals will react and turn into a thick, muddy brown sludge inside your radiator. This sludge completely blocks the flow to your interior heater core (causing loss of heat in winter) and can cause catastrophic engine cylinder head warping due to hot spots. If your fluid is green, flush the system with clean water immediately and refill with pure G12.
